UGX 400M Solar Water Project Commissioned in Mayuge to boost WASH Services

On Thursday 6thNovember, 2025, Mayuge Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Lt. Hajji Walugembe Aramandhani commissioned a new solar-powered water system in Mitimito village, Kitovu parish-Kityerera Sub-county. This project, a joint effort with Life Water International/Water for Good will enhance water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services for the community, serving the local health centre, church and mosque.
During the commissioning, RDC Lt. Hajji Walugembe Aramandhani expressed his gratitude to the Government of Uganda (under the National Resistance Movement) for creating a supportive environment that allows implementing partners to operate. He specifically thanked Life Water International for their crucial funding, which provided the water system and promoted sanitation and hygiene in the community and its institutions. However, the RDC also stressed the need for the beneficiary community members to raise their own funds to hire security personnel ensuring the water supply station is protected from encroachment by thugs.
The RDC urged community members to ensure His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni receives a substantially larger percentage in the upcoming Presidential elections specifically targeting 89% to enable him to fulfil his remaining manifesto promises. This target is a significant increase compared to the approximately 40% he garnered in Mayuge District during the 2021 elections.
According to Mr. Curuma Emmanuel, Country Director of Life Water International, their operations in Mayuge District date back to 2017. He confirmed that they have successfully completed three projects over a three-year span, from April 2022 to April 2025, across four parishes: Kitovu, Ndaiga, Bubinge, and Wandegeya.
He further noted Life Water International's baseline study conducted between April 2022 and June 2025, revealed striking progress in the project areas. Preliminary findings show a massive drop in diarrheal diseases among children under five years old, falling from 48% to 5.5%. The habit of handwashing improved dramatically rising from 19% to 71%, while the average time spent fetching water reduced from 90 minutes to just 7 minutes.
Mr. Curuma extended his sincere appreciation to the leadership of Mayuge District at all levels. He specifically acknowledged the excellent cooperation from local institutions, including Mitimito Primary School, the church and the mosque, for providing the necessary land and accepting the project within their compounds. Furthermore, Mr. Curuma pledged to install security lights at the water supply station as a tangible measure to help protect the area from potential encroachment.
Several key Mayuge District officials, including the representative for the District Chairperson, Hon. Bidhusu Jaffari (Secretary for Works and Technical Services), Hon. Bakaki Yusuf (Secretary for Health and Education), and Ms. Mbuliro Hadijah (representing the Chief Administrative Office), alongside local leaders Mr. Isooba Mukunya Ayubu (LC III Chairperson for Kityerera Sub-county) and Ms. Nakabuye Sylvia (Senior Assistant Secretary for Kityerera Sub-county), all extended their appreciation to Life Water International. They thanked the implementing partner for providing crucial assistance by taking on work traditionally done by the District, such as the construction of latrines and the solar-powered water system. They concluded by urging community members to take careful ownership and responsibility for monitoring the new project.
Kityerera Sub-County Health Inspector, Mr. Kasadha Eric stated that the new water system would combat social issues by reducing gender-based violence and unwanted pregnancies caused by water delays at boreholes. He stressed that the water is exclusively for children, women, and Persons with Disabilities in Mitimito and Kitovu villages. Mr. Kasadha concluded with a strong appeal for community protection, urging them to hire security personnel to prevent the theft of the solar panels.
Mr. Kiyemba Isabirye Muzamiru, the LC I Chairperson of Mitimito village, expressed deep thanks to Life Water International for their excellent service and commended community members for accepting the project despite the attached terms and conditions. He concluded by requesting that Life Water extend the same water project support to the surrounding neighbouring villages.
